We see a possible double pressure on Japanese businesses that import inputs but sell mainly at home. Bank of Japan policymaker Junko Koeda has warned against excessive caution on further rate increases. The OTR data separately tracks a weak yen, expensive imported energy and concern over global yields. Together, these create a different risk for a domestic service firm than for a large exporter with foreign-currency revenue. The first channel is the purchase bill. When the yen buys fewer dollars, imported fuel and materials can become more expensive in yen even if the foreign price stays unchanged. The second channel is borrowing. Higher domestic rates can raise the cost of financing stock, equipment or property as loans reset. Neither channel needs an immediate collapse in customer demand to put pressure on cash flow. We therefore see a gap in the usual Japan story. A weak currency may help the reported yen revenue of some exporters while hurting firms that cannot easily raise local prices. Strong AI demand can support parts of manufacturing without repairing that mismatch for a restaurant, carrier or small contractor. We are describing exposure, not claiming every small firm is losing money. Contracts, hedges and energy efficiency can change the result substantially. Over the next week, we would compare actual supplier renewal offers with loan reset dates for businesses that have high imported-input use. Check whether customers accept price changes, whether margins are fixed by contract and whether fuel surcharges adjust automatically. A measurable warning would be a higher input quotation and a higher borrowing offer with no matching selling-price increase. One company's experience should not be presented as a nationwide estimate. The opposing explanations is important. Koeda's remarks are not a policy vote, and the next decision may differ. Firms with fixed-rate loans, currency hedges or overseas sales may be protected. A yen recovery or cheaper delivered energy would also ease pressure. The BOJ speech provides policy context; the OTR data provides the broader cost cluster. We still need borrower-level terms to prove the squeeze is occurring. Japan's growth story can be healthy in one balance sheet and painful in the shop next door.","links":[]},{"id":"otr-slide-PDF-7153bc4a53f6ba82bf3fe475-47-detail-2","url":"https://ontherice.org/signals/PDF-7153bc4a53f6ba82bf3fe475-47/#otr-slide-PDF-7153bc4a53f6ba82bf3fe475-47-detail-2","title":"The idea, step by step","topic":"emerging","kind":"research","text":"Start with the main idea: what may be changing, how the clues connect, and what remains uncertain. Review status REVIEW 16 October 2026, 08:58:49 SGT Current assessment: Narrow to exposed firms; strengthen official evidence against a broad squeeze. Fresh check: We opened Koeda’s original15 October speech PDF. Page6 says firms’ funding conditions remain favourable overall, with no major deterioration despite some weakness among small nonmanufacturing firms. It also says construction costs and scheduling changes, rather than interest rates, have mainly reduced investment plans. We therefore keep the double-cost squeeze as a risk for particular unhedged borrowers, not an observed nationwide outcome.
