YouTube announced the BBC live news channel for the United States and United Kingdom on 15 October. Its 12 October Ask YouTube announcement also describes conversational discovery. These are separate product developments. The new connection is the gap that can appear between finding a news answer and finding a later correction to that answer. Neither announcement establishes that this gap has occurred. OTR should investigate it before treating a convenient answer as a complete news record. The current Five Desk report carries the distribution announcements. The Research Intelligence report asks OTR to preserve source ancestry. The World Memory design adds a separate correction loop. Read together, they suggest a concrete mechanism: an ongoing broadcast changes as reporting develops, but a question, answer, transcript fragment or shared clip can remain tied to an earlier account. A person may encounter the fragment without returning to the broadcast. More access can therefore increase the importance of a correction link without proving any increase in misinformation. This matters to newsrooms, educators, community moderators and people sharing breaking news with family. The practical action is to attach the programme time, source link and correction location to a saved explanation. A newsroom could keep a short list of claims that changed during a live programme. A school could ask students to distinguish the broadcast date from the moment a statement was spoken. OTR should describe this as a proposed workflow. It has not measured viewer behaviour or checked that these tools are available to Singapore accounts. Within 48 hours, an editor could audit 20 lawfully accessible news segments from one defined broadcast day. Record the original claim, its programme time, any visible update, and whether a person following the shared link can find the update within two minutes. Compare the same claims through the original programme and through a permitted question-based discovery route where available. The denominator is the 20 selected claims, including missing or inaccessible cases. The main outcome is correction discoverability, measured as successful finds divided by eligible updated claims. Report search time separately. Do not call more clicks better understanding. The strongest opposing explanations is simple: the original links and current descriptions may already carry corrections well, so discovery adds convenience without losing context. That would weaken the mechanism and should be reported. Selection also matters: choosing only dramatic corrections would exaggerate the risk. Use a fixed programme window and record all changes found, including harmless wording updates. If no correction occurs, the experiment cannot estimate correction performance; it can only test whether the workflow preserves timestamps and links. What happens next is a measurement decision, not a prediction of a media crisis. If the audit finds repeated broken correction paths, test a visible update card on a later sample. If paths are intact, retain the simpler format. Keep facts, saved excerpts and later changes separate so a reader can reconstruct what was known at each point. This is a social distribution signal about accountability after sharing. It says nothing about the BBC's audience growth, viewer trust, or the popularity of any political position. The handover to watch is simple: a faster answer still needs a route back to its correction.","links":[]},{"id":"otr-slide-PDF-4a512ff0603eae9057559a9a-31-detail-2","url":"https://ontherice.org/signals/PDF-4a512ff0603eae9057559a9a-31/#otr-slide-PDF-4a512ff0603eae9057559a9a-31-detail-2","title":"The idea, step by step","topic":"emerging","kind":"research","text":"Start with the main idea: what may be changing, how the clues connect, and what remains uncertain.
