We see two technological tracks moving closer together: AI agents getting better at running tasks, and small models becoming easier to run across cheap devices. Their meeting point deserves attention before anyone mistakes a laboratory warning for an attack already happening. Anthropic’s 12 October research examined parts of a self-replicating system. In controlled work, it explored agents taking over devices and models running across low-cost equipment. The company explicitly says the pieces have not yet met at the level needed for the complete threat it describes. Some agent tests used simplified environments and larger models running elsewhere. This was not a report of a self-replicating AI spreading across the public internet. [1] Why connect that with ordinary home equipment? Cloudflare’s account of the Aisuru-Kimwolf botnet describes compromised connected devices being used for harmful network traffic and proxy services. That is evidence of an existing device-security problem, not evidence that this botnet contains the proposed AI system. [2] The OTR data records the replication warning alongside practical deployment limits. OTR’s view is that defenders should watch the communications a device needs, not only the intelligence of a model. A system spread across many small machines would need those machines to exchange information. That creates a possible observation point for network operators, even if there is no central AI account to close. Older NIST guidance provides a concrete comparison: Manufacturer Usage Description lets a network restrict a device to its intended communications. It was designed for connected-device threats, not proved against this new scenario. Its usefulness here remains a hypothesis. [3] The strongest objection is that speed, memory, coordination and access barriers could keep the proposed system impractical. Ordinary botnet statistics cannot remove those barriers. The next test should be an authorised, isolated experiment measuring whether unusual distributed traffic can be detected and blocked without breaking normal device functions. We would reject claims of an immediate autonomous outbreak without incident evidence. The early lesson is practical: the next AI defence boundary may sit in a router, not only in a chatbot.","links":[]},{"id":"otr-slide-PDF-3974fb44708e18c50d0095e0-13-detail-2","url":"https://ontherice.org/signals/PDF-3974fb44708e18c50d0095e0-13/#otr-slide-PDF-3974fb44708e18c50d0095e0-13-detail-2","title":"The idea, step by step","topic":"emerging","kind":"research","text":"Start with the main idea: what may be changing, how the clues connect, and what remains uncertain.
