MOT’s September reply says the study considers demand, infrastructure and traffic. Separately, a dated PSA yard-crane vacancy still offers training. These records establish a proposed transport response and an actual hiring route. They do not establish a staffing shortage or an approved transit line. The hidden connection is between the job someone can learn and the job they can sustain. A worker may adapt to a new control system yet find the shift and journey harder to fit around daily life. If transport and workplace changes follow different schedules, part of an infrastructure gain can be lost outside the terminal gate. The OTR data’s port research puts technology beside worker adaptation. We extend that to the whole working day: training, shift time and travel belong in the same transition plan. Employers could benefit from checking journey reliability before treating recruitment or retention as a skills problem alone. Workers could benefit if local bus changes solve a practical obstacle sooner than a major new system. There is strong counterevidence. PSA already provides transport arrangements, and existing bus improvements may handle the issue well. Remote operations may also make the work more comfortable. We have not measured travel-caused resignations, absence or unfilled shifts. Over the next week, compare published service changes with real shift start and end times on a named route. Later, use a consented worker sample to test journey reliability and job acceptance. Smooth commutes and successful hiring weaken the constraint thesis; documented mismatches strengthen it. Singapore’s next-generation port needs useful automation inside the fence and a workable journey outside it. The machines can move faster while the people still need a better way in.","links":[]},{"id":"otr-slide-PDF-3974fb44708e18c50d0095e0-07-detail-3","url":"https://ontherice.org/signals/PDF-3974fb44708e18c50d0095e0-07/#otr-slide-PDF-3974fb44708e18c50d0095e0-07-detail-3","title":"The evidence and what to watch","topic":"evidence","kind":"research","text":"The evidence and what to watch What supports this view What could change this view Tuas relocation brings a longer commute alongside new technology. B: LTA/MOT separately describe an uncompleted BRT feasibility study. C: PSA’s dated recruitment listing provides a real training/hiring route, not a verified net-job increase. What people say vs the facts The speech describes automation and acknowledges the commute; it does not report a travel-caused staffing shortage. What to check Within one week inspect published route/shift changes.
